About the OCR IBT3 Course

The aim of this award is to develop a student's ability to use a range of IT facilities, analyse and interpret information, manage time and resources and organise a work schedule so that they can produce business documents and presentations.

Students will be required to use a range of software including e-mail, databases (Microsoft Access), spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel), computer presentation (Microsoft PowerPoint) and word processing (Microsoft Word) or DTP (Microsoft Publisher) software. The emphasis is on the manipulation and interrogation of files rather than data entry.


What is in the syllabus?
The qualification is made up of five Elements of Certification:

  • Electronic Communication
  • File Management
  • Source Data Processing
  • Automated Presentation Production
  • Publication Production

How is RSA IBT III assessed?

The assessment consists of one practical assignment, set by OCR, covering the Assessment Objectives for the five Elements of Certification. Source data, text and image files, will be provided by OCR on disk. In the assignments students will be required to:

  • Receive/Send e-mail messages with attached file(s)
  • Create directories/folders and manage files
  • Update an existing database and produce specified output
  • Extend an existing spreadsheet and produce specified output
  • Produce graphs from existing data
  • Produce an automated presentation
  • Produce a business publication

Who is the qualification designed for?

RSA IBT III is designed for people who possess or wish to develop a high level of IT competency. They should also possess a high level of analytical, planning and organisational skills in order to produce complex business documents and automated presentations all within production scheduling deadlines. Students will probably be aiming to work or will already be working in a role that requires considerable responsibility and autonomy.

The classes normally run for 2 hours a week for approximately 30 weeks.

The total cost of the course is £250.00. This can be made up of a one off registration fee of £25.00, payable on the first session of attendance followed by 30 weekly payments of £7.50.
