INTRODUCTION

In March 2001, the BBC will be launching Becoming WebWise, a new step by step learning journey designed to encourage newcomers to get to grips with the Internet.

Delivery and assessment of the learning journey will be carried out on-line via the BBC's comprehensive website, and certification is available through major awarding bodies.

OCR, the leading awarding body for IT qualifications, will be offering BBC Becoming WebWise as a unit of CLAIT. The unit has been approved, as part of CLAIT, under Schedule 2(a) to the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.

As a unit of CLAIT, BBC Becoming WebWise can be entered either as one of three or more units contributing to a full CLAIT Stage I certificate, or as a single standalone unit (possibly as part of a unitised learning programme).

RATIONALE

This vocationally related qualification is a single, standalone unit, intended to offer certification of achievement in introductory use of digital technology and the Internet. It draws on previous BBC Education campaigns, which use BBC television programmes and supplementary media (principally CD-ROM and online resources) to motivate and encourage learners into taking up further learning opportunities.

The qualification is intended both to act as a worthwhile body of content and achievement in its own right and to motivate learners to progress to more extended programmes, acting as a bridge to wider and/or higher level qualifications and associated courses.
